Major General Smedley Butler earned the Medal of Honor twice during back-to-back campaigns. He is one of only 19 people to earn the award multiple times.
During battle at Veracruz, Mexico, Butler, then a Major, earned his first medal for commanding his battalion with remarkable courage and skill. A year later, Butler earned his second for strategically leading the attack on Fort Riviere during the Haitian occupation, with Marines defeating the Cacos in fierce hand-to-hand combat.
Butler served for 34 years before retiring from duty. Marine Corps Base Camp Butler, in Okinawa, Japan, is named in his honor.
